Rethink OLX

An On Line eXchange ( OLX ) application is India’s used products buying and selling service provider. Since a long it has started and good growth achieved by a product. I will bring you to my whole case study of why it’s not performing as expected currently and consistently losing engagement and business and value they have made yet. Additionally how application can be improved to compete itself as well.

I will follow below design process to achieve desired outcome.

Let’s start to figure out problem statements.

What are problems

OLX has reached to 3.6 million of ads with a qualitative data and a good amount of users in India. Even a application is not pops up in people’s mind when needs comes up for buy or sell. OLX was a hike before 3–2 years but currently its not being as popular as before in India. As a part of study I figure out top reasons as below to behind why they are not competing in buy & sell market.

  1. Difficult to find required content on a screen or Richness of content
  2. Long loading navigation to reach to content
  3. Application is not familiar as a real life of users
  4. UI is not reactive & attractive for users to perform task
  5. User’s attention to application in daily life

What to be improve

Among all above problems I reached to few of solutions below to cover all things effectively.

  1. Fit into user’s daily life
  2. Less ambiguity
  3. Special impact on usage
  4. Buying, selling and conversation activities should be done quickly

Meaningful points are triggered improvements above which can target to lot small others in itself. So now I have all the problem statements clear and on paper to work for it. Here I going to focus first about “ How ”.

How to improve

  1. Alerts of ads from area of interest or requested
  2. Revamp designs with consistency, readability and relationship
  3. Clear navigation and search results
  4. Covering emphasis for contents
  5. Retention
  6. Create Need and Sell list of each user should be a key area to focus

A special experience can be given with a customization and relative contents. What is covered to improvements to do. More of users are interested to see about new ads are posted what makes them engaging to application and scaling up retention.

Retention are an activity what can improve usage and can give negative impact as well if there is no such relative content to be found on action. It has to be most promising action to get user back and give a cup of tea for what they actual came.

As a service it is key responsibility to track user’s list and relatively provide appropriate ads to look into. If a system will do it better than all most engaging a user problem will be covered.

What is User? ( Persona )

  1. Educated person knows technology
  2. Mostly corporate people
  3. Routine life
  4. Work on timely basis and do stuffs based on schedule and notifications
  5. System oriented
  6. Age of 24 to 45
  7. Free minded and ready to accept behavior people
  8. Opportunity builder
  9. Helping attitude

What are user’s other behavior and expectations when they want to buy or sell something online?

  1. Only genuine buyers & sellers
  2. Security of conversational
  3. Buyer or seller contact information will only shared if deal goes on from both side
  4. Well organized and detailed products details
  5. Less confusing navigation to reach to the content
  6. Minimum requirements and enough information to add product for sell on application which will drive buyer like a good salesman.
  7. Location based results

Wire-framing ideation

A flow of an application is very much correct in such a way to take user to get done action required. More of in this phase I will be correcting a layouts and some more new modules for engagements.

Below is wireframes what I have prepared before jumping into designs and make mistakes without having clear idea.

After getting finalize most of layout and information architecture I move forward to logo design, As its a big brand going to cover biggest consumer country. So based on user personas and improvements tick marks I had taken up rebranding get done first with below logo.

Moving forward UI design choose to go with. In that one thing was very sure about designing is to create visual what must be eye-candy on first sight. User decides in 1/3 of second after first sight that how much they going to be on that page. So it has to be attractive.

With that thought I have take n approach and made screens as below.

Here I ended case study with all phases freeze on beginning. I enjoyed research, problems finding and designs as well.
